Poor Mike Carey…he’s such a great ref and he’s stuck in what will likely be a messy, high-penalty Raiders/Chiefs game. But I am glad Ed Hochuli won’t be in San Diego for an important game.
9er fan says
mike carey and crew belong in that game. and charger_girl, boger isn’t much better…
The Gipper says
Delay of game on the defense? Two times this year on the Vikes. Neither with an explanation. wtf?
Jan says
9The gipper I didn’t see the delay of game on the defense. Was it in the first quarter Or when?

Ok, so what happened in the Seattle/Arizona game with that personal foul? Arizona had first in goal, but a penalty knocked them back to around the 20 yard line. It was first and goal from there.
Then second and goal after that.
At third down, they were on the 10 and the announced said something like “3rd and a smidge”, then corrected himself and said “3rd and goal” (which is what the screen said).
Then on fourth down, it was fourth and 1, with the yellow line appearing on the 9 yard line.
I was so confused. However, I was watching it via NFL RedZone, so they didn’t stay with that game long enough for me to figure out what happened. Any idea?
KMG 365 says
Yeah, I saw that too. The Fox broadcast was wrong as usual.
The play before was a second and two at the Seattle 7. Warner threw to Fitzgerald for a gain of 3. So it would have been first and goal at the Seattle 4 yd line. However, Beanie Wells committed a dead ball personal foul. So they move it back to the Seattle 19. From there it is first and 10. First down is an incomplete pass. Second down gains 9 yds. No gain on third down. Then on fourth and 1, Wells runs for a touchdown.

KMG- I’m with you until you say it is first and 10 at the 19. How can you have a first and 10 after a 15 yard penalty? At a minimum it is 4th and 14 from the 19. Either way this is a field goal series not a TD series.
KMG 365 says
Tom,
That’s a good question. It’s one of those strange quirks in the rules. Since Arizona made a first down prior to the dead ball personal foul, it automatically becomes first and 10 after the 15 yards are marked off.
The situation would have been different if it had been second down or any other down besides first.
If you have access to the rulebook the first place to look is Rule 14, Section 1, Article 7. All that says is that dead ball fouls are enforced from the succeeding spot and that the down counts.
Next, look at Rule 14, Section 5. That deals with the Time of Foul. The rulebook gives examples of different situations and the type of penalty. Of course, not all situations are possible. In this case the examples given by A.R. 14.57 and A.R. 14.62 are the closest to Arizona’s situation.
It might be hard to believe that Arizona deserves a first and 10 at the 19 instead of first and goal at the 19, but the rules are the rules and the officials made the correct ruling.
Tom says
Thanks for the clarification. This was also addressed in the post game recap articles in the local paper.
I really think this should be reviewed in the offseason. If the offense commits a personal foul penalty, they should not get a first and 10 just back farther. This is not really a penalty other than the clock time lost and some more room to pad stats…
Tom says
Well, I don’t know what happened, but I do know it should have been 4th and goal not 4th and 1. They score a TD on the “4th and 1” play vs probably kicking a FG. Huge momentum shift that loses the game for Seattle.
Horrible officiating…
Bailey says
the referees at the bucs game today were atrocious. they gave the game to the dolphins on the bullshit play before half time. I want the refs of that game to get fined or demoted
Ben says
Jeff Triplette has been having trouble with replay this season. Twice he went to administer a challenge, and found out that he didn’t understand basic replay rules. In Week 5 he misspotted the ball, and in Week 9 he did not get the clock right after a reversal.

All I can say is that I feel bad for Jeff Triplette. Just curious… why did his crew not help him out in the NON reviewable situation? Why did his crew not help him out with All Challenge Flags were exhausted? They have cards in their pockets & make the marks on them. Why did they leave Jeff Triplette the White Hat hanging? They are suppose to be a crew.
mr. bamboozaul says
i usually, don’t like to critize the officiating crew, but the crew of jeff triplette was horrible in the cowboys/packers game especially, when the packers blitz romo, and romo fumbled and felix jones recovered the football but later strip. the ball should have been awarded to the cowboys because replay showed that jones was touched by contact prior to the ball being stripped. also the packers was charged with a delay the game penalty for a phantom challenge that the packers did not have. i guess the officials was paying the cowboys back for the bad spot against the eagles the prior week that was awarded to the cowboys instead of giving the eagles the first down, when mcnabb went for the quarterback sneak. as they say the calls eventually evens out in the end. but man this year the officials appears to have shades and a cup this season. it time the nfl went to full-time officials but it probably want happen because with bad officials it’s “any given sunday” theme.
Sean says
yea the refs in arizona vs seattle were horrible the refs seem to always favor the cowboys steelers and cardinals in my opinon
Tom says
At least the Cowboys and Steelers still managed to lose their games…
